The network for sentinel surveillance for all types and subtypes of influenza viruses circulating among the population of Ukraine is created with the following purposes:

  • Monitoring of circulated viruses, which helps to update influenza vaccines annually, to find out new influenza viruses, which can have a pandemic potential and to carry out the monitoring of resistance to antiviral drugs.
  • Timely detection, investigation and reaction on influenza outbreaks, including cases caused by subtype A(H1N1)pdm or by other pathogen which can cause a pandemic.
  • To develop a national influenza control policy based on information about seasonality, risk groups, and influenza burden.
  • Rapid intervention by healthy services will allow to: prevent, constrain or limit human-to-human transmission of the virus; provide effective medical care to infected persons what will result to mortality reduction; decrease economic and social spending from influenza epidemics and possible pandemic.

As for 2015 the sentinel surveillance network includes 18 sentinel sites in Kyiv, Odessa, Dnipropetrovsk and Khmelnytskyy, relevant General Directorate of State Sanitary Service and Laboratory Centers of State Sanitary Service of Ukraine and also influenza reference laboratory, Scientific Influenza and ARI Center based on “L.V.
